Addressing the Year 2000 ProblemThe UF/IFAS Office of Information Technologies was involved in Y2K analysis and preparation far in advance of the glut of media coverage. IFAS computer systems and software were extensively checked, and non Y2K compliant components were identified and their problems addressed. As part of OIT's mission, a comprehensive Web Site was developed and maintained, providing extensive information and resources. Associated with the Web Site, a large display booth was assembled. It traveled all over the state, providing a location where people could obtain reliable information. OIT produced a special CD-ROM of Year 2000 information, software and procedures, which was distributed to Florida's County Extension Offices. Forms usually accessed online were distributed on the CD-ROM in case there were connection problems. Contingency plans for mission-critical applications were prepared and system backups were done just prior to the end of the year. All OIT staff remained on call throughout the critical period as systems were monitored. The hard work seems to have paid off. By all accounts, the rollover to 2000 went very smoothly, with only minor bumps here and there.
