HELP DESK AND TRAININGHelp Desk NewsThe Help Desk has been making large strides in developing a strong rapport with the Faculty and Staff of UF/IFAS. With the onset of new software titles and business applications the demand for computer support has skyrocketed. The staff at the Help Desk has been increased over the past year in order to better handle the rising needs for computer support.
In December of 1999, the Help Desk found themselves handling more calls than ever before. During that month we fielded 197 phone calls on everything from how to connect a network printer to downloading the newest version of the Faculty Accountability System (FAS). Click here to view more detailed information.
With the release of the newest patch for the FAS in early January, the Help Desk has come close to December's gargantuan call volume in only the first week of the new millenium.
In addition to the need for hands-on computer support, there has been an increased demand for training and instruction on the use of a variety of different software applications. The Help Desk can assist here as well. In addition to being able to rebuild your computer from the ground up, the Help Desk also offers several classes statewide to quench your computing curiosities. These classes are offered as a part of the In-Service Programs for Florida Extension Professionals, and you can register for these classes on-line at their website. Other training resources include the option to take classes through the Faculty Support Center as well as CIRCA. If these interest you, contact the Help Desk to find out about payment options for those classes. Don't forget we also still have the on-line courses that are offered through the University of Florida's partnership with the Gartner Group. Check out their website to see what is available for training on-line that can be done from your office or home, all you need is a Gatorlink account.
If we do not have a class that fits your needs, we are more than willing to create one for you. This may include more in-depth coverage of a curriculum we already offer, or may be a completely new topic. Feel free to contact us at anytime to schedule a training session at your location, and we will be happy to come and visit. We only ask that you guarantee a minimum of 10 attendees for your 'Training-on-Demand' session.
The Office of Information Technology is commited to helping all County Extension Offices obtain an online presence through the establishment of individual Web Sites. Our goal is to provide each office with the tools and training that they'll need to establish and maintain the Site. As a pilot program we visited selected offices in all 5 Districts (Baker, Gadsden, Columbia, Sumter, Charlotte, Pasco, Levy and Taylor) and developed a training program and a template that can be used to get started. This program is now being turned over to the Help Desk. The training session is a full-day affair, and at the end of the day your Web Site will be up and running. Contact the Help Desk for more information.
