4-H Technology Program

A State Major Program Team (SMP 713) has been established to develop an Information Technologies program for youth. The aim of this effort is to give kids interested in a career in IT a place where they can learn and ultimately earn professional certification. This team consists of Pete Vergot, Terrie Henderson, Suzanne Wilson, John Rutledge, Melinda Hogan, Dave Klepperich, Mickie Swisher, John G. Lilly Sr., Cora Meares, Fedro Zazueta and Sandy Joyner. In more detail, their goals are:

  1. Develop a 4-H curriculum that addresses three levels of preparedness for youth:
    • Basic literacy in IT (ability to use hardware/software and web-based resources.)
    • Intermediate literacy (ability to configure, diagnose and troubleshoot software and hardware.)
    • Advanced literacy (geared towards youth interested in a career in IT and certification.)
  2. Strengthen 4-H Extension Faculty to deliver the 4-H/IT curriculum in an effective manner. Acting as organizers, motivators, instructors and mentors.
  3. Develop partnerships with K-12 schools in Florida targeted towards after school enrichment and 4-H programs.
  4. Create the necessary infrastructure through out the University of Florida County Extension System to deliver this curriculum.

The resources for this effort, including several 5-seat computer labs, are available. The State Major Program Team is currently working to develop the cirriculum for this program. The ultimate aim of this program is to provide the youth of Florida with the IT skills that will be vital to them in the 21st century.
